Mention creationism, and many scientists think of the United States, where efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made headway in a couple of states. But the successes are modest compared with those in South Korea, where the anti-evolution sentiment seems to be winning its battle with mainstream science.

A petition to remove references to evolution from high-school textbooks claimed victory last month after the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) revealed that many of the publishers would produce revised editions that exclude examples of the evolution of the horse or of avian ancestor Archaeopteryx. The move has alarmed biologists, who say that they were not consulted. ?The ministry just sent the petition out to the publishing companies and let them judge,? says Dayk Jang, an evolutionary scientist at Seoul National University.

The campaign was led by the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), which aims to delete the ?error? of evolution from textbooks to ?correct? students? views of the world, according to the society?s website. The society says that its members include professors of biology and high-school science teachers.

The STR is also campaigning to remove content about ?the evolution of humans? and ?the adaptation of finch beaks based on habitat and mode of sustenance?, a reference to one of the most famous observations in Charles Darwin?s On the Origin of Species. To back its campaign, the group highlights recent discoveries that Archaeopteryx is one of many feathered dinosaurs, and not necessarily an ancestor of all birds². Exploiting such debates over the lineage of species ?is a typical strategy of creation scientists to attack the teaching of evolution itself?, says Joonghwan Jeon, an evolutionary psychologist at Kyung Hee University in Yongin.

The STR is an independent offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACR), according to KACR spokesman Jungyeol Han. Thanks in part to the KACR?s efforts, creation science ? which seeks to provide evidence in support of the creation myth described in the Book of Genesis ? has had a growing influence in South Korea, although the STR itself has distanced itself from such doctrines. In early 2008, the KACR scored a hit with a successful exhibition at Seoul Land, one of the country?s leading amusement parks. According to the group, the exhibition attracted more than 116,000 visitors in three months, and the park is now in talks to create a year-long exhibition.

Even the nation?s leading science institute ? the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology ? has a creation science display on campus. ?The exhibition was set up by scientists who believed in creation science back in 1993,? says Gab-duk Jang, a pastor of the campus church. The institute also has a thriving Research Association for Creation Science, run by professors and students, he adds.

Antipathy to evolution
In a 2009 survey conducted for the South Korean documentary The Era of God and Darwin, almost one-third of the respondents didn?t believe in evolution. Of those, 41% said that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support it; 39% said that it contradicted their religious beliefs; and 17% did not understand the theory. The numbers approach those in the United States, where a survey by the research firm Gallup has shown that around 40% of Americans do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced forms of life.

The roots of the South Korean antipathy to evolution are unclear, although Jeon suggests that they are partly ?due to strong Christianity in the country?. About half of South Korea?s citizens practice a religion, mostly split between Christianity and Buddhism.

Kristin Berkey-Abbott: My Third Skin Cancer

First, let me stress that my 3?skin cancers have all been the non-life-threatening kind.? No melanomas yet.? I also feel lucky that they haven't been on my face.? I've had 2 on my left arm, the arm that hung out of the window for years while I drove under a relentless Southern sun.? And now, a basal cell cancer on my collarbone, also on the left.

There it is in the picture above, between pearl and pencil eraser.? It first appeared a few months ago.? I know the drill:? any new, mole-like thing deserves a visit to the dermatologist.? It seemed to grow, but it didn't get crusty and/or bloody.? I've had people tell me not to worry, that it's just some kind of tag-like thing, that I can expect these as I age.

I ignored these people.? Still, it was a bit of a shock when the dermatologist said, "Yep, that's a basal cell cancer."

I'm used to my dermatologist saying things like "Nope, that's a freckle."? "Nope that's just an age spot."

But occasionally, the dermatologist takes things off my skin, sends them off to be biopsied, and I come back for a bit more scraping.? As recurring medical conditions go, I could have worse problems.

It's interesting to me to see people's reactions.? Some people are horrified at the idea of a cancer of any kind.? Even if I explain that it's not life threatening, I can still see the pity on their faces.

But frankly, I've been on the lookout for skin cancer my whole life.? I'm the first generation to grow up aware of the lack of an ozone layer.? And yes, I spent years tanning anyway.

Before that, I spent my childhood being sent outside to play.? My mom was?a big believer in the values of fresh air and sunshine.

They say that one of the predictors of skin cancer is a blistering sunburn.? I can't even count the number of times I've had a blistering sunburn.? And then there are all the sunburns that didn't blister . . .

When my dermatologist first met me, he said, "Why are you living here?"? For a moment, my mind reeled at the existential questions in the dermatologist question.

But of course, he?was wondering?why?I live in a place that placed me at such risk of high exposure to dangerous UV rays.? The whole planet poses that kind of risk, of course, but the closer we get to the equator, the more days of dangerous sunshine we'll likely experience.

And I'm blonde and fair-skinned and freckled.?

So, the fact that I get skin cancers shouldn't exactly surprise anybody.? And yet, it's still a bit of a shock each time I find out that I have one.

Not so much of a shock that I can't write poems.? Tomorrow, I'll share my new poem that's based on Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess."? In case you want to play along,?I've pasted?the Robert Browning poem below.? My first?bit came to me in the parking lot after my visit with the dermatologist:?

Alexander Kinyua, Maryland College Student, Admits Devouring Roommate's Brain and Heart

Maybe this zombie apocalypse thing really does have legs.

In another odd, horrifying incident of human flesh-eating, Alexander Kinyua, a student in Maryland, allegedly admitted to devouring his roommate's brain and heart.

The 21-year-old Morgan State University student says that he killed Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, who was reported missing last Friday, cops told the Baltimore Sun.

Kinyua's father called police late Tuesday night when Kinyua's brother reportedly found human remains, a head and two hands, in a metal tin in the basement.

The brother and father left the room for a short time, but when they came back, the body parts had been moved and Alexander Kinyua was washing out the tin.

Officers searched the house and arrested Kinyua.

The man then allegedly confessed a shocking revelation eerily reminiscent of Rudy Eugene: not only had he killed Agyei-Kodie by cutting him up with a knife and then dismembered him, he ingested parts of the victim's brain and all of his heart.

He allegedly dropped most of the remains in a dumpster.

It's yet unclear what Kinyua's motive may have been (no, there were no bath salts involved), but he was charged with first-degree murder on Wednesday.

The gruesome case comes on the heels of a similar attack in Miami, in which Rudy Eugene was killed after eating homeless man Ronald Poppo's face.

Wildfire tests New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? A wall of smoke advances across a vast swath of rugged country in southwestern New Mexico where the nation's wilderness movement was born nearly a century ago.

From the air, the smoke stretches as far as the eye can see. On the ground, firefighters talk about the steep canyons that keep them from directly attacking what has become the largest wildfire in New Mexico's recorded history and the largest currently burning in the country.

Sure, things might look bad. But to land managers and scientists, the record-setting blaze represents a true test of decades of work aimed at returning fire to its natural role on the landscape ? a test that comes as many Western states grapple with overgrown forests, worsening drought and a growing prospect for more megafires.

The Whitewater-Baldy fire has destroyed a dozen cabins while marching across more than 354 square miles of the Gila National Forest. A pair of lightning-sparked fires grew together to form the massive blaze.

Unlike last year's megafires in New Mexico and Arizona, this blaze is burning in territory that has been frequently blackened under the watchful eye of the Gila's fire managers.

Starting in the early 1970s, the Gila has been leading the way when it comes to implementing such an active fire management strategy. Instead of immediately dousing flames in the wilderness, forest managers have let them burn as long as conditions are favorable.

The question that the Whitewater-Baldy fire is expected to answer is whether that strategy will pay off with more natural, less intense fires.

"There's a great opportunity here to study a fire like this," said Matthew Rollins, the wildland fire science coordinator with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Center in Virginia.

"The opportunity exists to look at how this fire has behaved differently in terms of vegetation mortality, effects on wildlife and fish habitat and water quality," Rollins said. "We can study how it burned in the wilderness relative to areas with other types of fire management strategies and other types of ignition patterns."

So far, the word from the fire lines is that the majority of the 227,000-acre blaze has burned with low to moderate intensity, not the kind of near-nuclear strength that was exhibited last year with the Las Conchas blaze in northern New Mexico. In that case, entire mountainsides were vaporized, leaving nothing behind but the white ashy skeletons of what used to be trees.

And as for those unburned pockets within the fire's boundaries, Rollins said he believes many of those spots have experienced low-intensity fire numerous times over the last century to make them more resilient.

Previously burned areas have also helped slow the flames on the fire's eastern flank.

"The fact that this is wilderness and the wilderness of the Gila has seen a lot of fires, we are comfortable with allowing it to burn. What we do is monitor it and help steer it around to keep some of the impacts lower than they would otherwise be on their own," said Danny Montoya, an operations section chief with the Southwest Incident Management Team.

Montoya said the rugged terrain has forced firefighters to attack the flames indirectly by starving the fire of fuels along its perimeter.

The smoke also has prevented direct attack from the air. Several helicopters and small planes are helping ground crews with backburn operations.

While a burn severity map has yet to be released, members of the incident management team are estimating that only 20 percent of the fire has burned at high intensity.

Last week, the fire made a 60,000-acre run in one day, scorching mixed conifer at high elevations as the flames were pushed by gusts of up to 60 mph.

That kind of fire can be devastating, experts said.

With fire behavior ranging from active to extreme, it will be some time before the scientists can get on the ground to see how the Gila has fared. Until then, they are working on gathering the decades of research done on the Gila, which is home to the world's first designated wilderness. It was the father of the wilderness movement, forester and conservationist Aldo Leopold, who pushed for the formation of the Gila Wilderness in 1924.

Tree ring data that dates back to the 1500s tells of the forest's fire history and the age of its trees. The perimeters of the Gila's fires along with information about their severity and vegetation mortality for the last century have also been compiled by the U.S. Forest Service.

There's also more ecological data from the federal Joint Fire Science program that can be used for comparisons.

"I think it's going to be a success story for the use of fire for managing forests," Rollins said. "It might not look like it on TV right now, but we haven't had any fatalities or dramatic housing loss like we see in Southern California or it burning so dramatically close to communities like last year's Las Conchas fire."

Experts agree that the Gila will see changes regardless of the severity of the fire. In the worst spots, aspens and other shrubs are expected to take over.

"When we're punching multi-thousand-acre holes in areas of ponderosa pine and drier mixed conifer types with no seed sources surviving, it's very difficult for those conifers to be re-established," said Craig Allen, a USGS ecologist based at Bandelier National Monument in northern New Mexico.

Fire managers are also expecting flooding. As the Las Conchas fire showed, steep denuded areas resulted in walls of water washing down canyons during the rainy season.

Residents in Glenwood are already worried about the prospect of flooding, and federal wildlife managers are concerned about what sediment and ash in the waterways could mean for the native Gila trout.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also monitoring two packs of endangered Mexican gray wolves that are situated to the north and east of the fire. Last year, wolves in Arizona were able to escape the massive Wallow fire with their pups, but it's unclear how mobile the packs in New Mexico are since their pups are much younger.

The fire is about 15 percent contained, which much of that being on the fire's northern and northwestern flanks.

On Saturday, the more than 1,200 firefighters who are battling the fire continued to build lines to corral the flames before more threatening winds and dry conditions developed.

"We're going to continue fighting this fire aggressively without putting our firefighters in danger," fire information officer Lee Bentley said. "We're getting as much of a black line as we can around this fire."

Sandusky asks Pa. court to delay child sex case

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, facing trial next week on charges he sexually abused 10 boys, on Thursday asked a state appeals court to review his case and to delay the criminal proceedings against him.

The Superior Court's online docket indicated Sandusky filed a petition for review but did not explain what he was seeking. Sandusky also asked the court to seal the document, which was not available after business hours.

The judge in Sandusky's criminal case, John Cleland, on Wednesday denied a defense request for a continuance and a second request that would have given Sandusky the right to seek immediate Superior Court review of that decision.

Sandusky lawyer Joe Amendola, citing a gag order in the case, declined to comment on Thursday, as did a spokesman for the attorney general's office.

Sandusky, 68, awaits trial on dozens of criminal charges alleging he abused the boys, some on campus, over a 15-year period. He has repeatedly denied the allegations and tried to delay the trial, scheduled to begin with jury selection on Tuesday and opening statements June 11.

Penn State's president said the university has been trying hard to put the child sex abuse scandal in its rearview mirror and is healing.

President Rodney Erickson made his case before a pair of newspaper editorial boards on Wednesday and Thursday, talking up Penn State's response to the massive scandal, which tarnished its image and led to the ousters of Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno and Erickson's predecessor, Graham Spanier, whose presidency ended days after Sandusky was charged in November.

Erickson said Penn State is seeking to become a leader in the fight against child abuse, pointing out the school donated $2.6 million in bowl revenues to a group that operates rape crisis centers and to its new center for child abuse research and treatment.

"The university really has been moving ahead. Sometimes it's hard to get that message out," Erickson told Harrisburg's The Patriot-News on Thursday, adding: "It's been a difficult time, but I think in many ways we continue to heal."

A day earlier, Erickson told State College's Centre Daily Times that Penn State has created a "degree of separation" from the scandal through the academic, athletic and charitable achievements of its students and faculty.

Many alumni were infuriated when Paterno was fired a few days after Sandusky was charged, saying the university board of trustees rushed to judgment. Paterno died in January at age 85, and his family has been critical of the way the school handled the situation.

But Erickson told the Harrisburg newspaper that he has a "good relationship" with Paterno's widow, Sue Paterno, and son Jay Paterno.

"Sue and Jay have never left the fold. They have been strong supporters over many months," said Erickson, who also praised new coach Bill O'Brien's efforts to win over fans.

Erickson also said he took part in a "broad-ranging" three-hour interview with Louis Freeh, the former FBI director hired by Penn State's board of trustees to investigate the Sandusky scandal. Erickson declined to provide details of what he told Freeh. He said he isn't getting regular updates on the probe and will see Freeh's report when it is released to the public.
