Purists should have no fear either: you can still get into a code view to see what's going on behind the scenes. Brother of blind Chinese activist returns home, says lawyer

BEIJING, May 27 ? The brother of blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng who was reported to have gone missing has returned to his village in northeastern China, a lawyer said yesterday.

The short disappearance of Chen Guangfu had sparked concerns he was the latest target of government reprisals against the family of the activist, who escaped from his village in late April after 19 months of detention at home.

Shandong-based lawyer Liu Weiguo told Reuters Chen Guangfu had returned to Dongshigu village. Liu earlier said the activist was ?very worried? about his brother?s disappearance and was contacting friends to look for him.

?Brother Fu is now home,? Liu said, adding he had received a text message from Chen Guangfu last night.

Chen Guangfu had left his village on Tuesday and arrived in Beijing on Wednesday to seek legal help for his son who is detained on a charge of attempted murder. Friends and family had tried to contact him since Friday evening after it appeared he did not return to his hotel room in Beijing that night.

His son Chen Kegui, 32, was charged with ?intentional homicide? for using knives to fend off local officials who burst into his home on April 27, the day after they discovered his uncle had escaped.

He could face the death penalty. His lawyers, denied access to him last week, said he did not kill anyone.

On Wednesday, Chen Guangfu had recounted to Reuters details of his own torture and reprisals by authorities since his brother?s escape.

He said he was restricted from leaving his village, and police in Shandong warned him they would increase his son?s sentence if he gave interviews.

Activist Chen Guangcheng took refuge in the US embassy last month, where he stayed for six days and sparked a diplomatic crisis between China and the United States.

That crisis, which overshadowed a visit by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was finally defused last Saturday when China allowed Chen to fly to the United States to study. ? Reuters

A bit of a Sunday hangover developed yesterday regarding the U.S. national team, which had shellacked Scotland in a Saturday night Florida frolic, 5-1.

So Saturday brought euphoria over the accomplishment. The United States doesn?t beat European teams this way, after all. Yes, a team led previously by Bob Bradley or Bruce Arena might open a can of U.S. might on Cuba or some other economy car on the CONCACAF highway, but a four-goal win over Scotland? That?s one to Facebook about!

Then came Sunday. I got a few Twitter messages and blog comments that were all along the same theme: tap the brakes, ye media mavens, for Scotland is a poor, poor side at the moment. Saturday?s win doesn?t mean so much.

Only, I?m not buying it. The naysayers and buzz killers don?t get it.

It wasn?t the score; it was the manner in which it was achieved, stylistic, tenacious of pressure and perfectly representative of the plan manager Jurgen Klinsmann hatched nine months ago. (And Scotland, weakened no doubt, is a squad just the same of proud pros from quality European leagues.)

We all see contests where the score doesn?t accurately reflect the match?s true colors, where things just kind of get wackily out of hand at the end. This wasn?t one of them. The United States dominated front to back against a Scottish side that was never allowed to locate a groove in the steamy Florida night.

But again, it wasn?t just the margin. It was the U.S. flourish and the new way of playing that has everyone toasting Uncle Soccer Sam and rushing to laptops to order up another U.S. scarf or T-shirt.

This was a night where U.S. fans saw Klinsmann?s devilish plan come to beautiful fruition. He has preached of how best to get after opposition: he wants players stationed further up the field; greater tactical aggression from a less rigid arrangement, more pressure applied on offense and defense, a ploy that demands high confidence and higher degrees of fitness.

He?s been gradually building the elements, and Saturday it coalesced impressively.

By the way, the best two U.S. forwards of the moment, Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey, weren?t even on the field. So how ?bout them apples?

Yes, this Scotland was a poor version of itself. But players and managers had promised a typically spirited effort, if nothing else. Only, that didn?t matter. Spirit only gets you so far against a confident bunch that?s committed to a high-pressure methodology.

It doesn?t mean that the United States can go do the same to Spain or Germany or Argentina. Or Brazil, for that matter, as we might see Wednesday. But it does say this: The new way gives Klinsmann?s side the ability to dominate regional sides the way fans have long wished they could. And they won?t need to sit back and take it, hoping to bang something in on the counter against the global bully boys.

The new way just ?looks? more American, more assertive ? and no one needs to apologize for feeling good about it.

Discovery expected to shift research direction in lupus and asthma

ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? Newfound details of the immune system suggest a role for never-before-considered drug classes in the treatment of allergic and autoimmune diseases, according to a University of Alabama at Birmingham study published online May 27 in Nature Immunology.

The results advance the current understanding of the way the body's initial, vague reaction to any invading organism expands into a precise and massive counterattack. That expansion starts when a dendritic cell "swallows" a piece of any invader encountered, ferries it to the nearest lymph node and presents it there for notice by lymphocytes, the workhorse cells of the immune system.

According to the current model, dendritic cells first must encounter T lymphocytes in the paracortex, or T cell zone, within the node. Only there will the interaction enable lymphocytes to expand into an army of clones primed to attack the invader.

To the research team's great surprise, the data showed that, although immune response works this way during viral flu infections, it is not always the case. When the body is infested with parasitic worms, for instance, dendritic cells link with T cells near B lymphocytes, under the control of B cell-related signals and outside the T cell zone.

"Considering that diseases from asthma to lupus can occur because the system mistakenly ramps up the same types of T cell responses it normally uses against worms, our finding that B lymphocytes control the T cell/dendritic cell interactions that trigger such responses has important, practical implications," said Frances Lund, Ph.D., chair of the UAB School of Medicine's Department of Microbiology and corresponding author. "The field now has cause to look at several experimental and existing drugs known to interrupt B cell signals as potential treatments for diseases driven by T cells."

Study details

Before joining UAB in March 2012, Lund worked alongside Tim Mosmann, Ph.D., at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In 1986 Mosmann advanced his groundbreaking theory on the way the immune system decides which sets of immune cells are most effective against different invader types. According to his Th1/Th2 model, Th1 T helper cells were best against viruses because they helped invaded human cells self-destruct before viruses could turn them into virus factories. Th2 helper T cells were best against parasites because they helped the B cells mass produce antibodies that glommed onto and removed worms from the spaces between cells.

The current study found that B cells, as part of the Th2 response to worms, start pumping out a protein called lymphotoxin, which in turn signals nearby stromal cells to produce more of the chemokine CXCL13.

B cells are able to gather in B cell areas of lymph nodes in the first place because they express CXCR5 receptor proteins that sense and move toward higher concentrations of CXCL13. The team discovered that a set of dendritic cells also begins expressing CXCR5 during a worm infection.

With B cells and activated dendritic cells gathered near B cells, T helper cells next must join the party if the immune response is to expand. While T cells dump into lymph nodes at many points, only those that happen to enter near B cells, and to bump into CXCR5-expressing dendritic cells, drive the response to worms forward, according to the authors.

The authors also believe such interactions trap T cells near the B cell area and that proximity determines the kind of cells they becomes next. Those receiving the strongest signals become the T helper follicular cells that B cells must partner with to produce antibodies specific to the current pathogen. Those getting weaker signals become Th2 effectors that travel back to the infection site to cause the histamine release and intestinal muscle contractions that help to expel worms.

Though vital to effective immune responses to worms, T helper follicular cells and Th2 cells have a dark side. For example, T helper follicular cells in some cases inappropriately help B cells produce high affinity "auto" antibodies that recognize the body's own cells as foreign and can destroy the kidneys of lupus patients and the joints of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

In other cases, Th2 cells respond to allergens in the lung like house dust mites because the mites look like worms to the immune system and the confused Th2 cells respond to the allergen as they would to a worm. This mistaken recognition causes histamine release and bronchoconstriction in the lungs, two of the major clinical symptoms of asthma.

"We know of experimental biologics that interrupt the ability of B cells to give off lymphotoxin and prevent the development of helper Th2 cells and T helper follicular cells," Lund said. "Could such antibody-based treatments be useful against some autoimmune diseases and asthma? We think so, but time and further studies will tell."

Along with Lund, Troy Randall, Ph.D., the Claude Bennett Scholar in the UAB Department of Medicine's Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, and UAB post-docs Beatriz Le?n, Ph.D., and Andr? Ballesteros-Tato, Ph.D., made major contributions to the work. Also making important contributions were Jeffrey Browning at Biogen Idec and Robert Dunn at the Pfizer Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (formerly at Biogen Idec). The study was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau will face bribery and money laundering charges in Macau after his lawyers failed at a hearing to have them dropped, according to a statement at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange last night. (See statement here.)

Lau, who chairs Hong Kong-listed real estate developer Chinese Estates, ?ranked No. 5 on the 2012 Forbes Hong Kong Rich List with wealth of $6.5 billion.

The charges are tied to land?bids and ?the payment of HK$20 million, or $2.6 million, to Macau?s former public works chief Ao Man-long, who is serving a 28-year jail term, the South China Morning Post reported this morning. A check co-signed by Lau written to a Ao-controlled company was found in Ao?s former house during an investigation, the English-language daily said. ?

Trading in Chinese Estates Holdings was suspended this morning at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Lau faces charges?shortly after three other pillars of the business community ? the ?Kwok brothers of Sun Hung Kai Properties ? where charged with bribery.

Last week the Energy Information Agency sharply cut its estimate of shale gas -- from 827 trillion?cubic feet to 482 trillion cubic feet, reports the New York Times. Estimates for the Marcellus Shale in Appalachia cut cut from 410 trillion cubic feet to 141 trillion.

But this is like telling a Powerball winner: Oops, you only won $50 million when we told you it was $100 million.?Even 482 trillion cubic feet of accessible shale gas is a huge increase over what was thought available in the nation?five years ago and will have profound effects on the energy economy. 482 trillion feet is a 20-year supply for the nation, and many analysts believe it's far too conservative of an estimate.

And whatever shale gas is available in the Marcellus or the United States, shale gas is an international phenomenon. They're drilling?for it all over the world, and with more robust liquified natural gas infrastructure it's going to be increasingly portable. ?
