Surveyors at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center revealed after their recent study that if levels of circulating estrogens are reduced to some extent even, the corresponding risk of developing breast cancer can be lowered down considerably.
The same can be done only by losing a moderate amount of weight too, says author Anne McTiernan, M. D., Ph. D. Adding to the same, she said that the method is applicable only to obese women though.
The team had conducted a clinical trial aiming at test the effects of weight loss on sex hormones, both on obese women as well as obese postmenopausal women. The latter is the one, which is majorly at risk of developing the disease.
The trial included 439 overweight-to-obese women between 50 to 75 years of age, different groups of whom were made to exercise only, diet only, exercise plus diet and no intervention. Those amongst middle two groups lost
10% weight, reducing hormone levels and thus, risks of cancer.
While a close relation has been suspected between obesity and increased postmenopausal breast cancer risk, it is now being believed that the risk is a result of body fat forming estrogens. It is being concluded that weight loss can cut almost 50% risks.
