Oakdale teen affects community 9 years after death

Timothy Lee Luedecke may be gone, but for many, his spirit remains as alive as it did before his death nearly nine years ago.

His grave in Oakdale Cemetery is a testament to that. Purple and gold flowers atop the black granite tombstone serve as bookmarks for a framed photo of Timothy wearing his No. 25 football jersey. Several crosses and angel figurines surround the grave engraved with a bible verse.

Yet the item that celebrates Timothy's spirit more than any other is almost unnoticeable at first glance.

A few feet away from Timothy's grave ? on a weathered bench with an iron leg that has been hit by a lawnmower one too many times ? sits a nondescript plastic container. Inside are a small notepad and a few pens. The words written on those pages that reveal much about the young man who died too soon.

Inscribed are messages left by friends, family and even strangers wanting to wish Timothy a happy birthday, to say hello to their friend or to promise they will see him one day in heaven. Others are filled with more sorrow, expressing how much they still miss him and can't believe that he is gone.

The current notepad is the 10th to be left on the bench. It has come to symbolize what Timothy meant ? and continues to mean ? to his family, friends, teammates and his community.

"I have had people come up to me over the years about Timothy," said Timothy's mother, Elaine Luedecke. "They say, 'If it wouldn't have been for your son, then I would have missed out on the best part of my life.'"

A STRANGER TO NO ONE

Elaine and Ziegler Luedecke welcomed Timothy into the world on Dec. 18, 1987. He was premature, weighing only 4 pounds, 14 ounces, and had to be kept at the hospital for nearly two weeks. His parents brought him home in a Christmas stocking.

As early as anyone can remember, the boy acted as if he never met a stranger.

"He once told a preacher that he might grow up and be a doctor or preacher but that he would never be a lawyer," said Timothy's father, Zeigler. "The preacher asked him why was that, and he said, 'Because lawyers lie.'"

"Timothy grew up wanting to be friends with everyone he met," Elaine said. "When I think of Timothy, I have to think of his love."

He decided early in high school to attend LSU's veterinary school. He was a consistent honor roll student who took time out to tutor junior high students. He studied martial arts and also aspired to become a volunteer fireman, as his father had done briefly when Timothy was growing up.

Timothy's biggest passion, though, may have been his faith. He loved services at First Baptist Church in Oakdale, often attending two or more on Sunday, and was quick to quote Scripture to friends and teammates.

"He lived a model life," said Nick Plumlee, a childhood friend and football teammate. "Everything he did, he held to much a higher standard. He was a man of God. Whenever we got down, he was there to uplift us."

"When Tim was a young boy, around 5 or 6, he would sit quietly and seem to be absorbing everything the minister was saying," said Susan Murry, one of Timothy's Sunday school teachers.

Timothy also was passionate about sports. He was on his high school track, tennis and football teams. Football was his greatest love, despite not being the most gifted athlete on the field.

The 5-foot-9, 140-pound defensive back played mostly junior varsity, and was still a backup on the varsity team his junior season. But that didn't stop Timothy from being committed to the Warriors football program.

Hearing set for 3 ex-Penn State University officials

HARRISBURG -- A long-delayed court hearing against three former top Penn State University administrators over their role in the Jerry Sandusky scandal will begin Monday in Dauphin County Common Pleas Court.

The preliminary hearing -- which could last up to three days -- will determine whether the case against former PSU president Graham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz goes forward to a full trial.

The defendants are charged with perjury, endangering the welfare of children, obstructing justice, conspiracy and failure to report suspected child abuse.

All three men say they are innocent.

Prosecutors have accused them of being part of a "conspiracy of silence" to cover up Sandusky's crimes, in particular a now-infamous 2001 assault in a locker room shower.

According to a grand jury indictment and independent investigation performed by former FBI director Louis Freeh, the incident was reported by then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, who told the late football coach Joe Paterno, who in turn told Mr. Curley and Mr. Schultz, who then told former university president Graham Spanier.

The three administrators failed to report the assault to authorities, and then lied about it in grand jury testimony, prosecutors allege.

Sandusky was found guilty of 45 counts of child sex abuse; he is serving a prison sentence of 30 to 60 years.

"Graham Spanier, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz engaged in a repeated pattern of behavior that evidenced a willful disregard for the safety and well-being of minor children on the Penn State campus," states a grand jury document that lays out the charges against them.

In the spring of 1998, when Sandusky was a prominent defensive coordinator and assistant football coach at Penn State, the mother of one of Sandusky's victims made a report to the University Park Police, after she learned that her 11-year-old son had showered with the coach, grand jury documents state. A police official contacted Mr. Schultz, who took notes during their conversations about the specifics of the investigation, the grand jury presentment states.

"At the conclusion of his notes, [Mr. Schultz] pondered two chilling questions when he wrote, 'is this opening of Pandora's box? Other children?' " grand jury documents state. The grand jury reviewed "a number of electronic communications" among Mr. Schultz, Mr. Curley and Mr. Spanier on the matter.

"The plan of action undertaken [after the 2001 assault] by these three administrators, who formed the very apex of decision-making and power at Penn State, was created out of a desire to shield Sandusky from the criminal process and, perhaps most importantly, to spare the University tremendous negative publicity and embarrassment," according to grand jury documents.

A key component of the case hinges on the role of former state Supreme Court justice Cynthia Baldwin. She was serving as general counsel for Penn State, and the three men believed she was their attorney during their appearances before the grand jury in 2011.

Ms. Baldwin has said she was representing Penn State, not the three defendants.

The three have argued charges against them should be dismissed because of Ms. Baldwin's role. If Ms. Baldwin was representing the administrators, her testimony -- which the grand jury presentment says prosecutors relied upon -- would violate attorney-client privilege. If she was not representing them, the charges should be thrown out because they were denied their right to an attorney, mistakenly believing that they already had one, attorneys for the three men argue.

They've so far been unsuccessful.

The case against them has been delayed for months while their attorneys argued to have the case dismissed. But a judge ruled in April that the case could move forward after hearing several appeals.

"This court notes that Spanier, Curley and Schultz are 'highly educated' men who had positions of considerable influence at PSU as well as inferentially, knowledge about important evens that impact the reputation of the university; and it therefore strains credulity to infer that they were somehow deluded or misrepresented by attorney Baldwin," wrote Judge Barry Feudale in an April 9 opinion.

One legal expert believes the hearing is certain to find probable cause to move forward, as the legal threshold for doing so is fairly low.

"There's no way this case won't move to the next stage," said Wes Oliver, an associate professor of law at Duquesne University.

Then, the question "is about whether these men had enough information that they were criminally reckless in not acting," he said.

Caroline Roberto, who is representing Mr. Curley, said Monday's hearing is merely a part of the legal process and is not an indicator of a defendant's guilt or innocence.

"Tim Curley is innocent and we look forward to vigorously challenging the charges at every stage," she said.

Treasury's Lew: Congress needs to pass debt limit

(AP) ? Congress needs to raise the debt limit and take away the "cloud of uncertainty" about the nation's ability to pay its bills, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The fight over the debt limit in 2011 hurt the economy, even though, in the end, we saw an extension of the debt limit. We saw confidence fall, and it hurt the economy," Lew said on NBC's "Meet The Press." :Congress needs to do its job. It needs to finish its work on appropriation bills. It needs to pass a debt limit."

Senior lawmakers on Capitol Hill are trying to come up with must-do legislation to keep federal agencies running after Sept. 30 and prevent the possibility of a government shutdown. At issue is what is normally routine: a plug-the-gap measure to fund the government for a few weeks or months until a deal can be worked out on appropriations bills giving agencies their operating budgets for the full 2014 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

However, some Democrats don't want to vote to continue to fund the government at new, lower levels mandated by the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration. And some conservatives are making a last stand against President Barack Obama's new health care law. In addition, Senate Democrats are resistant to a $20 billion spending cut sought by many Republicans.

The issue has divided Republicans between those who think it's appropriate to use the threat of a government shutdown as a negotiating tactic, and those who don't.

Rep. Peter King, R.-N.Y., said Republicans should be searching for ways to de-fund or repeal the Obama health care act. But he called threatening to shut down the government "terror politics" and said the strategy wouldn't work. Others have worried that the gamesmanship could cause Republicans to lose control of the House.

Some observers say it's an idea doomed to fail anyway, since Obama brings both a veto pen and the White House podium to the battle.

"We should not be closing down the government under any circumstances," King said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has taken just that tack, rounding up fellow conservatives to pledge to oppose any budget extension that funds implementation of the health care law. Sunday, he said it was unfair to implement a law that many Americans don't want and that still has wrinkles that need to be ironed out.

"I understand that there's some in the Washington establishment, some from both political parties, that weren't happy with me over this," Lee said on "Fox News Sunday." ''And in this instance, I'm going to take that as a compliment, an indication that I'm doing something right."

"The fact is that we can delay this bill," he added. "And if we can delay it, we can stop its consequences, at least for now."

Lew maintains that the president won't negotiate over the debt limit.

"The mere fact of negotiating over the debt limit, after 2011, would introduce this notion that somehow there's a question about whether or not we're going to pay our bills, whether or not we're going to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," Lew said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." ''Well, it's not OK to default. Congress can't let us default."

"(Congress) has to stop looking for what's the last possible moment," Lew told "Fox News Sunday." ''They should get back after they take their time off in August and they should finish their work and get it done so that there's no uncertainty about America's ability to pay its bills."

Separately, Lew said no federal bailout is in the works for the city of Detroit, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection. Pressed as to why the government chose to bail out big banks, the auto industry and others, but isn't assisting the city, Lew said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the government has been giving Detroit technical advice and has made resources available to help take down blighted properties through federal programs.

But Lew said that the situation during the financial crisis that warranted the other bailouts was "unique," and that the current problems that Detroit has with its creditors, "it's going to have to work out with its creditors."

Par 4

Blue Tees: 417 yards

White Tees: 390

Gold Tees: 300

Red Tees: 300

Handicap: 5

The Layout: It?s fairly straight, with a gentle turn right approaching the hole. A narrow fairway gradually downhill leads toward a marsh that lies in front of the green. Trees line the fairway on either side, with six different bunkers greeting golfers around the green that slopes back to front back toward the swamp.

How about some strategy?

?You are going to need a nice, extended drive with the fairway running center to right,? said Gregg Tengerstrom, Silver Lake PGA pro. ?Depending on your drive, you are leaving yourself 150 to 190 yards out from the green. Your second shot, you will have to carry it over the marsh and swamp in front of the green. It is an elevated green, with sand traps all around it. It?s a precise (second) shot as to controlling how you do.

?It is tough to carry that second shot hitting over the marsh. It takes a demanding shot. Some golfers will lay up short rather than risk it.?

How do you attack No. 8?

?If you are going for the birdie, you need to make a well-placed drive,? Tengerstrom said. ?The green is fairly flat, but it does roll back to the front so a long putt (down) will roll back to the slope toward the swamp and marsh. You have got to be precise with that second shot. You have to be on target.?

What is the appeal of No. 8?

?The hole is right in the middle of the course as you get to the turn, so you have had a chance to warm up (with your round).? Tengerstrom said. ?Your average player is going to be happy getting his shot over the swamp. It can definitely be a make or break hole on the course for you.?

?It was a cheetah,? Johnson said Friday with a laugh. ?I had?to.?

A year ago, some didn?t give Johnson a chance against defenses; he was repeatedly questioned whether he had lost a step, or more, coming off the worst season of his career in 2011. He responded by running for 1,243 yards in his third-best season?yet.

And about that speed ? Johnson scored three touchdowns of 80 yards or longer. He now has six such TDs in his career, twice as many as any other player in NFL history. So racing a cheetah for National Geographic?s Nat Geo Wild may help Johnson send a pre-emptive message before the season opens Sept. 8 in?Pittsburgh.

?I haven?t lost any speed,? Johnson said. ?I?m just ready to really get back on the field and continue to play this?game.?

Morsi investigated for murder as rival rallies take to Egypt's streets

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi is under investigation for a slew of charges including murder, according to the state news agency, stoking tensions throughout Egypt as rival political camps took to the streets.

At least five people were killed and 140 were injured in clashes throughout Egypt on Friday, according to the ministry of health, as thousands of people took part in rival rallies in various Egyptian cities.

Millions are expected in demonstrations in the Arab world?s most populated country on Friday, between supporters of the army and backers of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood.

Amr Abdallah Dalsh / Reuters

A supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood holds a mask of ousted president Mohammed Morsi during a rally near Rabaa Adawiya square in Cairo on Friday.

Both political camps announced they would be protesting on Friday and warned there could be bloodshed. Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged Egyptians earlier in the week to hold rallies to give the military a ?mandate? to confront weeks of violence caused by his July 3 overthrow of Morsi, Reuters reported.

"Sisi out! Morsi is president! Down with the army!" a gigantic crowd of Morsi protesters, who were holding a sit-in protests around?Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, chanted, reported the BBC.

Morsi, who was elected by a narrow margin in June 2012 in the country's first democratic vote, has been hidden from the public since he was ejected from power. On Friday, Mena news agency reported he would be detained for 15 days while a judge investigated allegations against him. This is his first formal detention since he was ousted, Al Jazeera reported.

Hussein Malla / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

According to Reuters, the probe stems from charges that he conspired with Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to escape jail during the 2011 uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak, killing prisoners and officers, kidnapping soldiers, and lighting buildings on fire.

"At the end of the day, we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship," Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said. "We are continuing our protests on the streets."

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. was "deeply concerned" by reports that Morsi had been ordered to be detained for more than two weeks.

"We of course are deeply concerned by reports that an Egyptian court has ordered the detention of Mr. Morsi," she said. "I can't speak to the specific charges, but we do believe that it is important that there be a process to work towards his release. Clearly this process should respect the personal security of him and take into account the volatile political situation in Egypt, and that's where our focus is."

A Reuters witness said thousands of pro-Morsi activists clashed with pro-army protesters in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, with some demonstrators hurling stones down on the crowds from nearby rooftops.

The army has warned it will ?turn its guns? on those who use violence in the protests, Reuters reported, while the Brotherhood has said civil war is a possibility.

Hassan Ammar / AP

Egyptian soldiers stand guard atop an armored personnel vehicle on a bridge that leads to Tahrir Square on Friday.

On Friday morning, several hundred pro-army supporters gathered in Tahrir Square, the central rallying place two years ago for Egyptians. Demonstrations were likely to peak after the evening prayer marking the end of the day?s Ramadan fast.

A banner across one entrance to Tahrir Square read, "The people, the source of all power, mandate the army and police to purge terrorism," the BBC said.

Pro-army demonstrations were planned throughout Egypt; Morsi backers had also announced a large amount of rallies, with 34 in the Cairo area alone, Reuters said.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon called on Egyptians to protest peacefully and asked the interim leadership to ensure security, reported Al Jazeera.

But casualties appeared likely after a month in which nearly 200 people, mostly supporters of Morsi, have died, according to Al Jazeera.?

The West has become increasingly alarmed by the course the country of 84 million people has taken. Washington this week said it delayed delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Cairo and called on the Egyptian army to exercise "maximum restraint and caution" during Friday's rallies," reported Reuters.

The U.S. has not made a determination on whether a military coup took place in Egypt, which avoids a decision on whether U.S. aid should be cut off to Egypt.

"It is not in our national interest to make such a determination," State Department spokeswoman Psaki said on Friday, adding the law didn't require that a formal determination be made.?

If the administration were to determine a coup had occurred when Morsi was ousted, the $1.5 billion of military and economic assistance the U.S. provides Egypt would be required by law to stop.?

NBC's Catherine Chomiak contributed to this report.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone Units Must Overcome 10 Big Hurdles

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is easily the best Windows Phone device ever introduced. The handset comes with a 4.5-inch screen, a strong processor and a shockingly fantastic camera in the 41-megapixel PureView. And in keeping with Nokia's previous moves, the company is offering the smartphone in several different colors to ensure it appeals to the widest swath of consumers. Enterprise users, however, need not apply?this is a decidedly consumer-focused product. The hype surrounding the Windows Phone-based device is understandably strong. Microsoft and Nokia both believe the smartphone could be a winner, and judging by its specifications alone, there's no reason to suggest otherwise. But the trouble for both companies is that features are not the only factors that today's buyers care about. To be successful in the marketplace Nokia will need to do something truly special. If history is to be our guide, though, Nokia hasn't done anything special in years. So, the Lumia 1020 could be in for some trouble. Nokia must recognize this and address the challenges facing the Lumia 1020 before yet another handset fails in the market.

Move Over 5:2 Diet, The Low-GL Diet Makes You Lose More Weight ...

The 5:2 diet is the darling of the diet world, but as we know, there's always a better diet waiting round the corner.

A new book called Burn Fat Fast: The Alternate Day Low-GL Diet Plan by Patrick Holford and Kate Staples (she used to be the gladiator Zodiac before she broke her neck), looks at the priniciples of fasting and food combining, as well as what exercise to do to complement the diet. In short, a full body plan.

What is striking about the diet is that even though it incorporates fasting, it's a good plan for people who like to eat, or more simply, don't like the hunger aspect that we associate with dieting. Better still the exercise plan involves - on certain days - only 8 minutes of working out.

salmon and potato

Salmon and potatoes - mixing carbs with protein

So, first off, what is a 'low-GL diet plan?' GL stands for glycemic load, which measures the amount of sugar and starch in food and their impact on your body. Patrick says that a measure of glycemic load shows how much carbohydrate there is in each food and how fast the carbohydrate will break down into glucose (and therefore how quickly your blood sugar levels will rise).

The crux of the diet is about managing your insulin, or blood sugar levels. Insulin, says Patrick, is an ageing hormone, and also plays a key role in burning fat. So if you can control the levels of insulin, you can slow the ageing process and keep the weight off.

The idea of the diet is that you combine three fast days where you can eat a maximum of 800 calories, in low-GL foods. You can feast the other four days (on low-GL foods) and should implement the exercise plan during the week.

HuffPost UK Lifestyle caught up with Patrick to explain more about the diet.

How does it work and what should I eat?
Since 2005 we've been studying and testing the GL diet ? not by eliminating carbs but actually introducing the right kind of carbs alongside protein. Eaten together, protein takes longer to digest when you combine the two ? for instance putting seeds on your cereal or almonds with apples. By doing so, you slow down release of sugars.

It's also about choosing the right kind of carbs, so oats are slow, cornflakes are fast. Berries are slow, bananas are fast.

oats

How does regulating my insulin make me lose weight though?
With animal studies, it has been proved that if you eat low calories, you lose weight, but low calorie diets also seem to extend your life span and improve your health. It was then discovered that the reason for this is that a low calorie diet can switch on 'skinny genes'.

What are skinny genes?

When you eat a low-GL diet you don?t get blood sugar spikes, so your insulin goes down. It's clear that low levels of insulin switches on your skinny genes - it's called SIRT1. When you combine this with exercise, you burn fat much faster and more effectively. Conversely, we also know high insulin raises cholesterol, blood pressure, makes cancer cells grow faster and it makes you store fat faster. The secret to weight loss for me, is everything that keeps your insulin down.

The Three Golden Rules
  • 1. Eat no more than 40 GLs a day
  • 2. Eat protein with carbohydrate

You recommend three fast days rather than two - why?
The 5:2 diet recommends you fast two days a week but the diets which are most effective are three days a week ? I?ve gone with what the science supports. The 5:2 did have a clinical trial, but the scale of weight loss doesn?t excite me so much. They were seeing 3.7 kilograms of weight loss at its highest, over three months. We were seeing weight loss of 7.5kgs.

weight loss

But is fasting actually healthy?
Intermittent fasting can be healthy provided you are not sick. A lot of people find it changes their relationship to food. A common report is that on the feast days you have an allowance of food, a lot of people find they aren?t feeling as hungry.

It also makes you think about why you eat. We don?t eat just for hunger but for other reasons, and it helps you understand the reason between eating for hunger and being upset or tired.

How much weight can people lose on your diet?

We have lots of cases of people losing, on average, one stone a month which is 4kgs. Our record to date is one person who lost 9 stone in 10 months. We did a trial on 22 people and the trial was just on diet, and the average weight loss was 14.5 pounds in 12 weeks.

How much exercise do you have to do on the diet?
There are two types - one is aerobic exercise and the other is resistance or muscle building. The combination of the two causes the bigger weight loss and best insulin control. You have to do three days where you do an eight-minute strength routine. Then spend three days of 30 minutes aerobic exercise that gets your heart rate up. It was devised by Kate who is a brilliant personal trainer and found that her clients were getting amazing results while following my diet.

University of Montevallo continues recognition as College of Distinction

MONTEVALLO, Alabama -- The University of Montevallo has retained a designation as Alabama's only public institution on the web-based Colleges of Distinction, a guide for students seeking a nationally recognized school that is recommended by educational professionals.

Colleges and universities qualify for the list through nominations by high school counselors with the institutions rating high in four areas: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes.

"To say that Montevallo is unique would be an understatement. A member of the prestigious Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, Montevallo has emerged as a national leader in liberal arts education and has been recognized in numerous editions of U.S. News and World Report's 'Best Colleges' as the highest ranked Tier One, public master's level university in Alabama," according to the Colleges of Distinction website.

"The college of choice for many of the brightest young minds throughout the Southeast and beyond, Montevallo is situated near the geographic center of the state on a 160-acre central campus noted for its unparalleled beauty. Montevallo's white columned brick buildings, famous red brick streets, verdant lawns, colorful flowerbeds and stately trees surround students with academic tradition," the website states.

The Colleges of Distinction looks at statistics such as graduation rates, classroom sizes and other factors in considering a school's selection. Other criteria include interviews with college admission experts, faculty and staff at the institution, high school counselors and other college administrators.

MechWarrior Online launches Sarah's Jenner in honor of 5-year-old cancer victim

Five-year-old Sarah Parries loved the Jenner in MechWarrior Online. She and her father would sit and play the game, with Sarah loving the streak SRM variant so that she could lock on and move quickly. Unfortunately, Sarah was a victim of cancer, but her story made an impact on the developers of MechWarrior Online and led to the creation of a new champion 'Mech crafted in her image, the appropriately named Sarah's Jenner.

Sarah's Jenner will set you back $10, but the team at Piranha Games won't be seeing a nickel of it. Minus sales tax, all of the proceeds from the sale of this 'Mech will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society, supporting others suffering from the same ailment as the girl who inspired this decor. You can take a look at the machine in action just past the break, and if you're an experienced 'Mech pilot you should consider picking up a special machine to honor an unfortunate victim.

Apple's earnings fall, iPhone sales rise as more people buy older, less expensive models

SAN FRANCISCO ? Apple's sales of older, less expensive iPhones climbed in its latest quarter, highlighting the challenges facing the world's most valuable technology company as it tries to reverse a recent decline in its earnings and prove that it can still innovate.

The results announced Tuesday topped the projections of analysts who steer the way investors tend to react to financial reports. That helped lift Apple's stock by $16.39, or nearly 4 percent, to $435.38 in extended trading after the numbers came out. The shares still remain down more than 35 percent since the latest model of the iPhone came out 10 months ago.

The downturn largely reflects the intensifying competition in the smartphone and tablet computer markets. Apple defined and then dominated those markets for several years to propel the company into a hyper-growth phase that enthralled Wall Street. But there are now signs that Apple's once seemingly irrepressible growth is stalling as rivals such as Google Inc., Samsung Electronics and Amazon.com Inc. make inroads largely by undercutting Apple's prices.

The competitive pressure has prompted Apple to sell older models of its iPhones at prices below the newest model and introduce a smaller, less expensive version of its iPad.

The impact of that shift can be seen in Apple's fiscal third quarter, a three-month period ending in June.

It marked the second straight quarter that Apple Inc.'s earnings have fallen from the previous year after a decade of steadily rising profits. The company earned $6.9 billion, or $7.47 per share, in its fiscal third quarter, a 22 percent drop from $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per share. The earnings topped the average estimate of $7.31 per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Apple's revenue during the quarter barely budged from last year, resulting in the smallest gain since the Cupertino, Calif., company unleashed a mobile computing revolution with the iPhone's debut six years ago.

Revenue totaled $35.3 billion in the latest quarter versus $35 billion a year ago. Analysts had projected that revenue would be unchanged from a year ago.

The mid-range of Apple's forecast for the current quarter ending in September calls for revenue of $35.5 billion, which would be a slight decline from last year. The company didn't predict what its earnings will be for the current year, but analysts are bracing for another decrease from last year.

In a Tuesday research note, Topeka Capital analyst Brian White said the quarter ending in September will cap "a year to forget" for Apple. He is counting on the company to do better during its next fiscal year, largely because he believes Apple will invent a new line of devices.
