The Saints won 62-7 in the Superdome, the most points scored in a game since 1985. ?As you would expect, some of the numbers from the game were nutty.
The Saints scored on their first nine possessions. ?They had 36 first downs to nine for the Colts.
Drew Brees had more touchdown throws (five) than incompletions. ?His 31-for-35 gives him an 89% completion percentage, the second highest all time. ?Sean Payton broke the record for earliest head coach hot dog in NFL history.
It?s tempting to say the Colts just aren?t very good and move on, but the Colts have hung around in every game since Week One. They are an NFL team. It?s not like other teams are going to put up 62 points on them.
At their very best, the Saints offense rivals any in the league. Including the Packers and Patriots.
They have three dynamic running backs. Their first round pick Mark Ingram ? who suffered a bruised foot late in the game ? is probably the third least important back behind Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas.
The Saints have a tight end on pace for a record-breaking season. They have four wide receivers who all have different skill sets and know the offense incredibly well. They have two Pro Bowl guards. ?They have the biggest homefield advantage among good teams in the NFC.
At 5-2, the Saints aren?t perfect. ?But they should get to 6-2 next week against the Rams before heading back to New Orleans for a huge division game against the Bucs.
We still have questions about whether the Saints defense is Super Bowl caliber, but the offense has the pieces to be just as good as it has ever been.
