It may have broken cover officially at the end of last month, even popping up for a quick hands-on along the way. Car bombs kill 8 in Shiite regions of Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) ? Officials say four car bombs in Shiite-majority parts of central and southern Iraq have killed at least eight people and wounded 31.

Police say the deadliest blasts on Sunday took place in and near the central city of Kut, where two parked car bombs targeted an industrial area and a gathering of construction workers.

Two police officers said at least five people were killed and 26 others wounded.

Another police officer said back-to-back car bombings in the southern city of Basra killed three people and wounded five.

Two medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Ovechkin wins Hart Trophy as NHL's MVP

CHICAGO (AP) ? Alex Ovechkin capped his great season with the NHL's biggest award.

The Washington Capitals right wing won his third Hart Trophy, given to the league's MVP, on Saturday night, beating out Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby and John Tavares of the New York Islanders. Ovechkin led the NHL with 32 goals during the regular season, the first time he's led the league in scoring since 2009, when he won his second straight Hart Trophy.

"It was kind of hard, but as everybody knows, I like challenges," Ovechkin, who was moved to the right wing this season, said in taped remarks. "It was a big challenge for me and the coaching staff, but we make it."

Ovechkin is the eighth player to win three or more Harts, joining Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Bobby Clarke, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Eddie Shore and Howie Morenz.

The vote was expected to be close after Ovechkin and Crosby tied for fourth in the NHL with 56 points, despite the Penguins center missing 12 games with a broken jaw. And it was, with Ovechkin edging Crosby by just 32 points (1,090-1,058) in voting by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. It was the closest Hart vote since Montreal's Jose Theodore and Calgary's Jarome Iginla finished in a virtual tie in 2002.

Crosby did, however, win the Ted Lindsay Award from his fellow NHL Players' Association members as the league's best player.

"I don't think you play throughout the season with awards in mind, to be honest," Crosby said. "To be recognized by the players for this one means a lot. The Hart, I was in the mix and to be that close, you'd love to win. ... (But) I'm not going to be too upset that I didn't win."

In other awards announced before Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals, Montreal's P.K. Subban won his first Norris Trophy, given to the NHL's top defenseman. Subban topped the league's defensemen with 11 goals and 27 assists, and was largely responsible for Montreal's resurgence.

"I think that every year you grow as a player, both on and off the ice. I think as an organization, a group and a team we improved this year," Subban said. "When you improve, everybody benefits. I just think I benefitted from our improvement this year.

"Being a fan of the Montreal Canadiens since I was little kid and growing up a Habs fan, I appreciate being a leader for this organization."

Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets won the Vezina Trophy, given to the NHL's top goaltender.

Bobrovsky, who beat out Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Antti Niemi of the San Jose Sharks for his first Vezina, was the main reason Columbus was in the running for a playoff berth until the very end of the season. The Blue Jackets and Minnesota both finished with 55 points, but the Wild got the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference because of fewer non-shootout wins.

Bobrovsky finished 21-11-6, with a 2.00 GAA, .932 save percentage and four shutouts.

"This is not my final stage," the Russian said through a translator. "I can be better and I will get better.

Florida's Jonathan Huberdeau won the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie.

"There were a lot of good rookies this year," Huberdeau said. "I wasn't expecting anything and I'd glad I won it."

The Panthers center played in all 48 games for Florida, ranking second both on the team and among NHL rookies with 31 points (14 goals, 17 assists). Among first-year players, he finished third in goals, fourth in assists and third in shots on goal (112).

"For sure it helped that I had more ice time than I was expecting to have with all the injuries we had," he said.

"You don't have to think when you play every other game," he added. "I wasn't thinking about the Calder. I was just playing my game at and the end I got the trophy."

Panasonic VT60 Television: $3000 of Video Perfection

Panasonic VT60 Television: $3000 of Video Perfection

When it comes to high-end HD sets, you get what you pay for. And in the case of Panasonic's new top-of-the-line plasma set, it's worth every penny.

What Is It?

A THX-certified flat-screen television, and arguably the single best-looking plasma set on the market right now.

Who's It For?

People whose home theaters are actually theaters?not just two rows of couches and some blackout curtains?and want their display to reflect the investment. Simply put, rich folk.

Design

The VT60 may be beautiful to look at but that's only when it's on. The 60-inch single-sheet screen is surrounded by a roughly 2-inch black bezel and rested atop a flat, silvery-grey stand?just like most every other one we've seen. Nothing about the set itself really stands out save for the integrated pop-up camera.

Using It

Setup was simple and straightforward but exhaustive. Setting up the 97 pound TV and stand requires at least two people and performing the initial software registrations?setting up Wi-Fi, setting up the voice-control, setting up the motion-tracking remote, setting the home screen options, registering streaming accounts, etc?took the better part of an hour, and that's not including calibrating the picture.

The VT60 offers a slew of calibration setting options. In addition to the standard sharpness, brightness, hue, and saturation tweaks, you can apply filtering like the Brilliance Enhancer, Motion Smoother, and others. It's also got a full complement of ISFccc options for professional installers.

While the video camera's facial recognition feature (which loads a personalized home screen depending on who turned it on) is more gimmick than feature, the voice command functionality is freakin' awesome. Panasonic built a mic into the Viera touch remote so that it now not only acts as a mouse for web browsing and data input, it also understands your speech. This allows you to effortlessly input user information, dictate web addresses, and even control video playback. And it actually, you know, works.

The Best Part

Once you get through the setup and actually sit down with this set, it's just incredible. The black levels and shadow details are unreal, the color accuracy is nearly perfect and the colors themselves are syrupy-saturated without making skin tones overtly Boehner-orange. This is one great, great looking screen. What's more, it's expansive enough to hold a video feed and a web browser window simultaneously without looking squeezed and crowded.

Tragic Flaw

The bright room performance is nothing to write home about, with noticeable glare even when watching on overcast days. Also having an integrated camera constantly staring at you would make watching porn on this thing rather uncomfortable.

This Is Weird...

Calibrations are tailored per input?that is, the Custom calibration setting you set on HDMI 1 can be different from the same setting on HDMI 2 and 3?which is helpful if you use the one channel for normal TV watching in a well-lit room but turn the lights down to watch DVDs on HDMI 2. Handy, but can also be a pain if you want the same calibration across all channels.

Test Notes

  • The VT60 loves to auto-switch between input channels on its own accord when you turn a device on or off.
  • The Viera's voice recognition isn't Google-good but it's definitely better than typing.
  • For this test, I used the Mastered in 4K version of Ghostbusters, Blu-ray discs that will also be able to play on the 4K TV you get after this one.

Should I Buy It?

Whether or not you want to shell out three large for the best-performing plasma we've seen in the past year is entirely up to you.

Turkish PM vows to stop park protests

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? "Lawbreakers" will be removed from Istanbul's Taksim Square, Turkey's prime minister declared Thursday, rejecting the European Parliament's resolution condemning the excessive use of force by Turkish riot police against demonstrators.

Ratcheting up his defiant tone, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan appears determined to end two weeks of protests that have put an unflattering international spotlight on his Islamic-rooted government and its handling of the biggest street unrest of his 10-year tenure.

Pianist Davide Martello plays a recital to protesters gathered in Taksim Square, in an unusual respite from tear gas, water cannons and aggression. This verified video was uploaded to YouTube by Koray Agziyagli.

Erdogan's comments came a day after his Justice and Development party proposed a referendum over a development plan at Taksim Square that has fanned the protests. Police have repeatedly fired water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters; five people have died and over 5,000 have been injured. The government says 600 police were injured as well.

"This square belongs to the people of Istanbul, the people of the whole country, and to all international visitors. So we cannot allow lawbreakers to hang around freely in this square," Erdogan told local party leaders. "We will clean the square."

Erdogan also lashed out at the European Parliament over its non-binding motion for a resolution that expressed its concern over "the disproportionate and excessive use of force" by Turkish police.

The EU assembly said it "deplores the reactions of the Turkish Government and of Prime Minister Erdogan" ? and accused him of adding to the polarization of the situation.

Just minutes before the EU legislature approved the motion in a show of hands, Erdogan thundered to raucous applause: "I won't recognize the decision that the European Union Parliament is going to take about us ... Who do you think you are by taking such a decision?"

The protests erupted May 31 after a violent police crackdown on a peaceful sit-in by activists objecting to a development project that would cut down the trees in Gezi Park, adjacent to Taksim Square, with a replica of Ottoman-era barracks.

The demonstrations then spread to dozens of cities, rallying tens of thousands of people each night, and broadened to a protest over Erdogan's overall rule.

Demonstrations spread to the capital city Ankara as well. On June 8 in Kizilay Square, vociferous demonstrations are met with tear gas at the front of the crowd. This verified video was uploaded to YouTube by Kas?m ?ktem.

Protesters have been objecting to what they say is the prime minister's increasingly authoritarian style and his perceived attempts to impose a religious and conservative lifestyle on a country with secular laws ? charges he rejects.

Protesters who have camped out in a peaceful sit-in in Gezi Park remained on site Thursday. Their continued presence by the hundreds has served as a base for large numbers of protesters who have congregated by the thousands on Taksim Square ? usually in the evening, after work.

Also Thursday, 26-year-old Ethem Sarisuluk ? who had been on life support for days ? was pronounced dead, according to family lawyer Sema Aksoy. He was believed to have been hit in the head by a tear gas canister June 1 during protests in Ankara, though lawyers were going to sit in on the autopsy to verity the exact circumstances leading to his death.
